Flying Pig unveils 20th Anniversary Plans for 2018 Race Weekend, May 4-6

The Cincinnati Flying Pig Marathon powered by P&G is marking its 20th running in 2018 with a series of events and celebrations honoring the participants, volunteers and community partners who have made this running festival one of the largest in the country. At a kickoff party Wednesday, July 20 at The LB @Rookwood, Executive Director Iris Simpson Bush announced the new initiatives that will be part of the year-long celebration.

“This past May we welcomed nearly 40,000 participants from all 50 states and nearly two dozen countries who took part in the Flying Pig,” she said. “In 2018 we expect a record registration and we anticipate that a number of events will sell out as runners want to join us in our 20th year.”

As part of the celebration, runners and walkers who finish the Flying Pig full marathon will receive a commemorative finisher’s jacket, the first time in Flying Pig history that a jacket has been offered to those who finish the event. Nearly 500 participants signed up at the 2017 race to participate in the fullmarathon.

Leading up to the 20th anniversary weekend, May 4-6, 2018, the Flying Pig has commissioned a new ArtWorks mural, “Dream Big & Fly High,” which will be installed this fall on the façade of the Hyatt Hotel downtown. It will be dedicated during Flying Pig week next year.

Also to mark the anniversary, the Flying Pig will curate a 20-day festival called “20 Days on the Run” leading up to Marathon weekend, featuring daily celebrations in the communities along the Marathon and Half Marathon routes.

A 100-page commemorative coffee table book will be published featuring the history of the Flying Pig Marathon and photos from the talented photography team led by Mark Bowen, thanks to a grant from the Haile Foundation. An accompanying photo exhibit is also being planned for the spring.

The Flying Pig also will hold an awards show, “The Piggies,” to be held Thursday, May 3 at the Aronoff Center to honor participants, volunteers, sponsors and the “Streakers” (some 90 runners who have done all 19 Flying Pig marathons).

On Friday night of Flying Pig weekend, after the Little Kings Mile race, the Pig will hold a free street party and concert at The Banks.

Registration is now open for all events for Flying Pig weekend. More information and a link to the registration page is at
