CPS and ABC Announce the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2018

Fourteen outstanding alumni and coaches from the Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS) will be inducted as the Class of 2018 in the CPS Athletic Hall of Fame, presented by Underground Sports. Their accomplishments are in everything from cross country, football, basketball, and baseball to tennis, swimming and diving, and track and field. This year we are inducting Honorees that range from as early as the Class of 1946 to the Class of 2000 with coaches working as recent as 2008. “These athletes and coaches have distinguished themselves both on and off the field of play," said Josh Hardin, CPS Manager of Athletics.

The Class of 2018 Living Athletes are Dennis Duermit (Withrow, 1989), Andre Frazier (Hughes, 2000), Glynn Johnson (Walnut Hills, 1996), Jenny Johnston (Walnut Hills, 1994), Chip Jones (Woodward, 1988), Al Lanier (Hughes, 1969), Roland West (Withrow, 1962), and Mary Wineberg (Walnut Hills, 1998).

The Class of 2018 Coaches are Tom Chambers (Withrow, 1966-95 & 2005-08) and John Young (Aiken, 1974-85).

The Class of 2018 Posthumous Athletes are Dwayne Berry (Aiken, 1975), Denny Dase (Central Vocational, 1959), Robert Fagin (Western Hills, 1946), and Pat Groeniger (Western Hills, 1946).

The Class of 2018 will also include Honorary Selection, Chris Nelms (Former CPS Board Member/Founder of CPS Athletics Hall of Fame).

Local sports broadcasters John Popovich and Lincoln Ware are emceeing the dinner and induction ceremony at the Stadium Club East of Paul Brown Stadium.

Brian Leshner, Executive Director of the event host Activities Beyond the Classroom (ABC), said, “Extracurricular activities such as athletics provide opportunities to build leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and self-discipline. ABC is proud to help honor these outstanding inductees, all of whom are excellent role models for current Cincinnati Public Schools students.”

In addition, Josh Hardin, District Athletics Manager for Cincinnati Public Schools stated, “Cincinnati Public Schools has an incredibly rich and historic pedigree when talking about athletics. We are privileged to have an opportunity to invite these model athletes & coaches back to our district and community to recognize their accomplishments.”

Activities Beyond the Classroom is a nonprofit that creates and manages more than 200 athletic and cultural extracurricular programs and activities, ranging from foreign languages to team sports, for more than 15,000 Cincinnati Public Schools students every year.
