Spend Mother’s Day in San Francisco

Mother’s Day in San Francisco has a nice ring to it.

Frontier Airlines will make it easy and affordable to fly non-stop to SFO and Reds fans will also note that the team is spending the weekend playing the San Francisco Giants at AT&T Park.

So here are a few travel tips to consider when booking your trip.

Getting There: Frontier Flies Non-Stop from CVG to SFO

I like Frontier Airlines. Sure it’s no frills but you can’t beat the $148 roundtrip price offered for a non-stop flight leaving May 11 (arriving at SFO at 5:44 p.m.) and departing May 14 (RED EYE ALERT: 9:25 p.m. with a 4:56 a.m. arrival to CVG).

Grab a good book and enjoy the almost five hour flight for less than $200 (depending on when you book).

Staying There: Hotel Diva in Union Square

On a recent trip to San Francisco, I booked at room at Hotel Diva for a one-night stay. The name caught my attention on Travelocity as did the location and price. Located in Union Square near a number of great restaurants and shops, my Friday overnight lodging was just over $200. A quick look at Travelocity and Hotel Diva has rates on Mother’s Day Weekend starting at $183.

Hotel Diva is sandwiched between a Starbuck’s and Colibri Mexican Bistro, which also provides in-room delivery to hotel guests. And there is a refrigerator in the room so you can shop at the Farmer’s Market for fresh cheese and wine.

Unless you plan on driving to wine country, I wouldn’t recommend renting a car as downtown San Francisco is walkable and the trolley system takes you to the hot spots. Plus it’s $55/night to valet your car as there is no hotel parking.

Reds vs. Giants
AT&T Park is a beautiful stadium in the South Beach neighborhood on the San Francisco Bay and home of the 2014 World Series champions. I recently toured the stadium and enjoyed the ball park for its tributes to the team’s baseball greats (Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, among many) and the variety in food and beverages. I would recommend arriving early and enjoying lunch at the Public House, located right inside the ball park.

On Saturday, May 13 and Sunday, May 14, the game between the Reds and Giants begins at 1:05 p.m. On Saturday, fans will receive a collectible tin box and Sunday’s prize is a tote bag. Tickets are available here.

Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market on Saturday Morning
On Saturday morning, take a stroll to the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market (8 a.m. to 2 p.m.) where more than 100 vendors set up shop under a tent with goods ranging from fresh produce, seafood and other delectables.

Inside of the Ferry Plaza are a number of small shops anchored by Sur La Table that include artisan cheese maker Cowgirl Creamery, Recchiuti Confection which offers artisan chocolates by the bite or in gift boxes (we recommend the sea salt caramels) and Ferry Plaza Wine Merchant for a tasting or shopping for a good Californianwhite or red.
