On Saturday, Deafinitely For All Entertainmen teamed up with the Reds Hall of Fame to share the story of Deaf baseball player William “Dummy” Hoy for a special celebration at The Banks centered on his birthday, May 23.
DFA Entertainment is a Deaf founded production company that promotes inclusivity and empowers Deaf/hard of hearing talent through film, TV and media.
With help from Hall of Famer Marty Brennaman, along with ASL-interpreters and Jon-Jon, the event brought renewed attention to Hoy’s legacy and contributions to the game. Hoy played 14 professional seasons in the late 1800s and became one of the era’s most respected leadoff hitters. His presence in the game helped influence the use of hand signals for balls, strikes, safe, and out calls – a system that remains central to baseball more than a century later.
The birthday party waw part of a larger push to have Hoy inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.
